You have to choose a niche for your writing career. Either writing fiction or nonfiction; fiction is made of short stories, novels, novella, poetry that is poems, romance fictions and others. Choosing a niche will give you the focus on what to write on, on any given time. It won't only give you focus, it will make you an expert on it.
Before you choose a niche, you first have to know how to write, taking note of your tenses, deciding to use either the present or past tenses. Writing a fiction will include; plot, themes, characters, setting and journey motif. Now I will take them one after the other.
Characterization/character is the major element of any fiction. In poetry, it is called, the personae. Characters are people that keeps the story lively. We have the major characters, round characters, minor characters, flat characters, protagonist, antagonist, villain and others. Stories revolves round the characters.
Settings is the place and time where the fiction is written. It could be historical, contemporary, colonial, precolonial and others.
Theme is the subject matter of the fiction, be it novel, short stories, poems, novella. Every fiction has a theme... It subject matter
Plot, every literary text revolves round a plot. How the story is actually written either from the beginning, middle to the end or from the end to the beginning. You have to choose the pattern that works for you.
