There are two ways to be successful in your field of study, career or life. Firstly make friends with older people. Associate with people you want to be like. No matter how small you are, make them your friend. There were once like you, they had their humble beginnings too so don't feel shame. Get a mentor, spend time with him or her, get to hear their life experiences. How they went through a particular stage of their lives and how they overcame it. Just as it is said that bad association corrupt good manners. Who you associate with matters. They can influence your life, change the way you think, your lifestyle and may help you grow in one way or the other. When you spend time with the people you want to be like, they will help mould you, shape you, change the way you think to theirs, with time you reason like them. Share your problems with them, they will help you solve it.
You become like the people you spend your time with. You have to be careful in selecting friends. Sometimes, people think they can hang out with a certain crowd and are sure they won't become like them. They think that somehow they immune from the influence. But they are only fooling themselves. After a while, they begin to act like them and absorb aspects of their personality without even noticing it. Before long, they start becoming the same kind of individuals as those they hang out with. These were the words of advice from Ben
Carson's mother to Bennie.
Secondly, read widely, get books read them. In books, we get knowledge, life experiences, and ideas just as in the words of William Ellery Channing which says, it is chiefly through books that we enjoy intercourse with superior minds. In the best books, great men talk to us, give us their most precious thoughts and pour their soul into ours. God be thanked for books. They are the voice of the distant and the death and make us heirs of the spiritual life of past ages. Books are true levelers. They give to all who will faithfully use them, the society, the spiritual presence of the best and greatest of our race.
Apart from spending time with liked minds or a mentor, you also read good books. Cultivate the habit of buying books. Don't just buy them, please read them to avoid rat eating your books off the shelf. It is through reading and buying of books, I knew how to put words together to make sense. I learned how to spell words too. As I read, I wrote. New words gets to my memory without having to open a dictionary.
